Challenge

As payment technology evolved, allpay needed to redevelop its platform to meet user expectations while ensuring compliance. Due to their headquarters’ location outside of tech hubs such as London, talent shortages had long been an issue, slowing development.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, however, it became a critical challenge due to rising attrition rates and the average time to hire reaching 40-50 days.

We had exhausted our local talent pool and so needed to find a new, long-term location to source the developers we needed.

To avoid any delays in delivery, allpay explored other options for sourcing and retaining quality talent. After a detailed investigation, they partnered with The Scalers to extend their existing development teams in Bangalore.

Solution

After several consultations with The Scalers’ Advisory, Talent Acquisition, and HR teams, allpay’s stakeholders agreed to hire three initial senior developers skilled in C#, .NET, Azure, and React. These initial hires would each be integrated into an existing Scrum team and would then help onboard the next hires in a few months.

To ensure allpay reviewed only highly skilled developers with excellent communication skills and the right culture for their organisation, The Scalers conducted its 7-step recruitment process. When allpay came to review the final candidates, they could focus on finding the best fit for their team.

All the due diligence was taken care of by The Scalers based on our requirements, thanks to the 7-step recruitment process that The Scalers undertake. All we had to do was have the final chat with the hiring manager at allpay.

Ensuring security and compliance

Finding talent was just the start. The Scalers also coordinated with allpay’s security experts to ensure their new team would follow their standards and regulatory requirements, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, ISO 45001, and ISO 50001 standards, and be a Level 1 PCI DSS compliant organisation.

To achieve this, allpay’s new Bangalore office was set up to mirror allpay’s UK standards

  • Devices procured and locked down at allpay’s UK HQ before being shipped to India
  • 24/7 on-site security, with guards monitoring entrances and common areas
  • Dedicated secure office space with restricted entry

The outcome

In the years since allpay set up its Bangalore office with The Scalers’ help, the team members have helped deliver increasing value through regular deployments. The members of the direct debit team earned particular praise from the CEO for their work on this financially significant part of the allpay platform.

The back office team has maintained development of the legacy platform while working on a parallel platform using modern technologies. This new platform has enabled new payment methods such as account-to-account transfers. Meanwhile, a member of the prepaid team designed pipeline templates that are now in use across all of allpay’s Scrum teams.

As of November 2025, the Bangalore team consists of nine members, including a Senior Test Analyst and Development lead, who were hired a year after the initial set-up. Members are spread among allpay’s scrum teams with two Indian developers in each to aid with navigating time zone overlaps. Due to the full integration with allpay as well as the impact and recognition of their work, there has been zero attrition in the Bangalore team.

Thanks to partnering with The Scalers, allpay turned its hiring crisis into a long-term competitive advantage that will continue to pay dividends for years to come.
